They ensure that the correct goods are received and shipped on time to the correct customer without damage. They are quite busy during their shifts, especially during peak times when a lot of freight is coming and going.

Over 90,000 people are employed as Shippers and Receivers across Canada in the Trucking and Logistics Industry. Shippers and Receivers play a critical role in managing goods that move in and out of the warehouse or yard.
Shippers and Receivers spend their days:
- Preparing shipping documentation, like bills of lading, customs forms, invoices, and other shipping documents manually or by computer
- Assembling containers and crates, recording contents manually or by computer, packing goods to be shipped and affixing identifying information and shipping instructions
- Overseeing loading and unloading of goods from trucks (completed by materials handlers)
- Inspecting and checking incoming goods against invoices or other documents, and recording shortages and rejecting damaged goods
- Unpacking, coding and routing goods to appropriate storage areas
- Maintaining internal, manual or computerized record-keeping systems
- Operating forklifts, hand trucks or other equipment to load, unload, transport and store goods (if required)
Experience as a warehouse worker (i.e. materials handler) or clerk may be required of applicants. Working directly with the freight and cargo in the warehouse provides them with the experience and skills needed to move into this position more easily. Although requirements of applicants will vary by company, the following may apply:

- Some companies require a forklift certificate and/or a valid driver’s license for the role
2) Physical Requirements
In general, the physical work of moving freight is completed by Materials Handlers; however, during busy times, Shippers and Receivers may also help keep freight moving. Typically, Shippers and Receivers will use equipment, like forklifts or dollies, to lift and move freight. Shippers and Receivers, however, do spend a lot of time on their feet, walking throughout the warehouse.
Compensation depends on many factors, including the company, location, type of load/cargo, and level of experience. Benefits vary but often include (at minimum) basic medical, vision and dental coverage. Other benefits, such as vacation, pension, and profit-sharing, depend on the company and its compensation model.
