Route Schedulers spend their days:

• Preparing route schedules for daily deliveries, which includes:
  • Using various software applications and mapping tools to determine the best routing options
  • Considering available equipment and capacities of trailers
  • Considering factors that impact scheduling, such as peak travel periods, construction, holidays, and construction
  • Ensuring transport equipment meets required size, turning radius or load/weight restrictions for the proposed route
  • Reviewing schedule requests, cargo type, running times, distances, driver availability and other critical factors to determine feasible and efficient options
  • Assigning personnel to appropriate routes
• Adjusting existing schedules and routes on an as-needed basis throughout the day
• Producing operating reports by compiling equipment and personnel records – including hours in service, distances, maintenance, required repairs and other data
• Managing and coordinating returns and reshipments
• Communicating with various departments and personnel to improve routing efficiencies and solve programs

Working Conditions

Route Schedulers typically work in a corporate office environment; however, some companies are moving to hybrid workplaces, where some Route Schedulers work from home on a part-time or full-time basis. Route Schedulers must be able to:

• Use computers and use communications equipment (e.g. phones, radios) to check information and make arrangements
• Work evenings and/or weekends (depending on the company)

1. Educational Requirements

• Most companies require a high school diploma.
• Most companies prefer individuals with strong digital technology skills, as scheduling and route planning is often completed electronically, using various software programs and applications.

2. Skills and Abilities

• A high attention to detail – routing and scheduling can be very complex
• Working under pressure and time constraints
• Organizational skills to manage multiple routes and schedules at once
• Ability to determine routes considering the required equipment
• Digital skills to use computerized systems, including routing, scheduling and mapping software and applications
• Critical thinking skills and the ability to make logical schedules and solve problems that arise
• Ability to multi-task throughout the day
• Typing and computer skills to prepare documentation
• Excellent communication skills
• Knowledge of the geographical area

Compensation of Route Schedulers depends on many factors, including the province, company and the level of experience of the individual. Benefits vary but often include (at minimum) basic medical, vision and dental coverage. Other benefits, such as vacation, pension and profit-sharing, depend on the company and its compensation model.
