Dispatchers communicate directly with drivers on the road to provide information, help solve problems and provide support when needed. Being a dispatcher is a fast-paced and interactive role – they spend most of their shifts communicating with others. Being calm under pressure, meeting timelines, and being a good communicator are common skills employers look for when hiring for this role.
Dispatcher positions are considered entry-level positions; however, experience in operations or dispatch is always considered an asset. It is also not uncommon for Transport Truck Drivers to move into a Dispatcher role when they want a break from being on the road. Drivers bring a unique perspective, having been behind the wheel and having experience with scheduling, customer service and problem-solving.
